Some Wii features from 1up: The Kane and Lynch movie has had its Kane for quite a while in Bruce Willis, and now it's found its Lynch. Screenwriter Kyle Ward tweeted last night that Jamie Foxx is in as the psychologically unbalanced mercenary James Lynch. He had to clarify that he wasn't referencing the movie based on Uncharted that he's also writing, after one user jokingly asked about "a black Nate Drake." We previously reported that producer Adrian Askarieh was impressed by Bruce Willis' enthusiasm for the script. "He...

Some Wii features from 1up: Between the first Sonic the Hedgehog reboot, Golden Axe: Beast Rider and other less than stellar titles, Sega's original IPs have taken a bit of a beating. No more though, the publisher said in a recent interview with Computer and Video Games. "It's important that our old IPs are respected, [and] we need to deliver a good product," said Sega's Mike Hayes. "And in some instances we have done that - look back at when we re-did Sega Rally. It scored well and was moderately successful commercially...

Some Wii features from 1up: At GDC last week, En Masse was showing off its first MMO localization effort, Tera. Those who attended the show floor might have had trouble spotting the booth from amongst the slew of other Asian-market game artwork displayed though; Tera's art style is distinctly Korean -- especially obvious if you're familiar with the likes of Lineage II -- with its long-limbed light and dark elves, and strange rock-like armor covering little-to-no body parts with protruding bits in all the most useless places...

Some Wii features from 1up: Posthumous Cult Gaming How fans keep the memory of cult favorites alive. By Bob Mackey The modern mainstream gaming press is a fickle beast. Sure, some titles will often draw months (or years) of attention from hungry and enthusiastic journalists, but the week after release, it's, "So long, and call us when you get a sequel." And, aside from the odd retrospective, current trends in coverage dictate that games existing outside this small window of time deserve no attention until the point that they're "clas...

Martin Lihs and Frank Matuse’s WiiSpray, the art project that combines a projector, a custom Flash interface and a Wiimote inside a spray can-shaped enclosure, now has documented proof that it is awesome. Over the weekend, International Forum Design awarded the creators of the WiiSpray project its iF Communication Design Award in the category of product interfaces.

In August, International Forum Design will announce “gold award” winners from within the group of iF winners. Even if WiiSpray doesn’t get that, it’s already noteworthy enough to see a Wiimote-based homebrew project win a design award. And it’s quite an achievement for a couple of students!

We stopped by Ubisoft’s San Francisco offices late last week to spend more time with its upcoming Nintendo platform lineup. Although we’d played many of the same games — at the same stage of development — during E3, now was the time to really focus on details. So, first up was Red Steel 2, a game that initially had us smitten with its manga-esque East-meets-West visual style, but failed to impress once we took hold of its controls.

So, once again, we were faced with the extremely short demo / gameplay primer Ubisoft had created for last month’s trade show. This second look didn’t leave us any more enamored with the mix of sword slashing and pistol shooting, but we were able to get a better idea of exactly what didn’t feel right. At the same time, we came away even more impressed by the game from a visual standpoint than when we’d first seen it in action.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash Up doesn’t just remind of another famous Nintendo franchise with the word Smash in the cover, now it’s got the same style of cameos going on. The Tanooki took note of two different Rabbids that will make an appearance in the melee brawler.

The first Rabbid appears to be a standard insanitus bunnykin, while the other is a Sam Fisher Rabbid. The characters surely have their own fighting styles and special moves. Check out the video after the break.

The controversial “Demo Play” feature devised by Shigeru Miyamoto and Nintendo won’t just be limited to New Super Mario Bros. Wii and other console-based adventures. A blurb in Japan’s Nikkei newspaper notes that the feature, which allows players to skip difficult areas and watch them played automatically, will also be used in portable games in the future. Nikkei referred to it as a “skip functionality” or “skip feature.”

Nikkei notes that this feature is designed for high-speed action games,” so presumably you won’t be able to let Dr. Kawashima step in and count the number of people who just ran out of the house (we hate that one), nor will you be able to make the Pokémon start choosing themselves mid-battle.

This week, Japan finally gets Super Punch-Out!! on the Virtual Console. The Wii game, for which this SNES release has served as a promotional tool in other territories, isn’t out until July 23 in Japan, so Super Punch-Out!! will have to tide over the crowd of Japanese gamers hungry for cartoon violence.

Also available on the Virtual Console: cartoon violence of a different variety and an older vintage, in the form of Namco’s 1985 horizontal shooter Sky Kid. And on WiiWare this week: nothing at all.

Virtual Console:

Yes, people are cheating online in The Conduit already

Ian, Mike and Andrew put down their Wii Remotes for this week’s podcast, and talk about online cheating (gasp!) in The Conduit, EA Sports Active, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 (again), a crazy story about a mother selling a stolen Wii, and an even crazier story about Nintendo buying an entire TV show. Plus, Miyamoto says the next Zelda game won’t be “that radically different”, No More Heroes jumps platforms, and SEGA makes a commitment to mature titles on Wii. Listen to this episode today!

Majority plan to get one soon or are waiting for more game support

The Wiire recently polled its readers on the following question:

Have you bought Wii MotionPlus?

ps-wmp-sales

At first glance, it appears that many people haven’t run out to pick themselves up a Wii MotionPlus yet, but plan to get one soon (37.9%) or are waiting for more games to support it (31.8%).

For those that do own the device, 17.6% got it as a pack in with either Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 or Grand Slam Tennis, while 6.1% absorbed the higher cost and bought it separately. Finally, 6.5% simply aren’t interested in

In his biweekly column, “Down. Right. Fierce.,” Chris Holzworth explores gaming topics from alternative approaches. Here, he delves into the direction the Zelda series needs to take for it to survive.

Zelda’s Re-Awakening

chris_portraitA new Zelda is coming. It’s official. Now seems as good a time as any to discuss what direction Shigeru Miyamoto needs to take the franchise in. I emphasize needs since Miyamoto recently told Nintendo Power that the next Zelda wouldn’t be “radically different.”

This is a problem. Change is a necessary component of growth. Unfortunately, change is one thing Nintendo’s not very good at. Sure, they
