Some Wii news from 1up:
Thank God that’s over. Like many years, 2009 has been a roller coaster ride of highs and lows. Microsoft and Sony both tried to out-Wii Nintendo by announcing new control input devices at E3. Nintendo, on the other hand, rolled out a device to detect if their players were even still alive. Between all the bluster and insanity this year has had to offer, there’s a lot of crazy sh*t you might have forgotten. That’s why we’ve put together this list (in no particular order) of the moments that had us reaching for a shot of sweet release just to dull the pain.
PSPgo announced sans UMD at higher price
It’s usually nice to see hardware get an update a few years down the road once its flaws have become apparent and correctable. It’s somewhat less nice when that update actually removes functionality that’s been taken for granted and somehow actually costs significantly more than what we’ve had kicking around for years. Which was merely the first step down an increasingly ludicrous path.

Some Wii news from 1up:
As games get more cinematic, the trailers are only going to get more elaborate. This year brought us great efforts from the likes of Bungie, Rockstar and Valve, with trailers featuring everything from live action sequences to the voice talents of Patrick Stewart. Here are some of our favorites.
Nobody could have guessed that Nintendo and Team Ninja would team up to make a new Metroid game. The unlikely pair managed to get off to a good start though, kicking off the hype with one of the most talked about trailers of E3.

Some Wii news from 1up:
For all of the people who like to bleat “THE PC IS DYING,” well, they’re just plain misinformed. Not only will the PC be seeing some strong multiplatform releases (hello there BioShock 2, Mass Effect 2, and Battlefield: Bad Company 2!), but there’s also a host of damn fine PC-only titles. Games like the Blizzard Blast of StarCraft 2 and World of WarCraft: Cataclysm, the two science-fiction MMO behemoths (Star Wars: The Old Republic and Star Trek Online), and APB in addition to the numerous smaller titles help keep the PC relevant. Also, if we could make this a list of 11 or 12 or even 13 games, then we’d also be adding titles like Command & Conquer 4, Supreme Commander 2, and even the slim hope of some version of Diablo 3 (a beta, please?!?!).
Dev: Blizzard | Pub: Blizzard
The game that just can’t get here soon enough and proof positive that Blizzard still sticks by its “the game ships when it’s finished” adage. There’s a ton of us around the office who still play the ten-plus year old original game, and it’s still great — so a improved version with modern visuals is okay with us. While a lot of people (we’re looking at you, Korea) are looking forward to the online play most, some of us are story-nuts and want to see what Kerrigan has cooking or if there’s an even bigger threat to the galaxy than the Zerg. Come this summer (that’s our informal guess), we’ll all have a chance to find out.
Dev: Bioware | Pub: LucasArts
The Star Wars name already commands an amazingly large fan base. Couple that with BioWare’s much-respected role-playing game cred and know-how, and you’ve got a recipe for mouth-lathering anticipation. Now, toss that all into the online world of MMOs and our loved ones have already begun to steel themselves against our eventual departure from this world to a galaxy far, far away. Could this be the game to carve out a spot next to the ubiquitous genre leader, World of Warcraft?

Some Wii news from 1up:
By 1UP Staff
You know, 2009 would have been an awesome year if the stuff we were looking forward to didn’t get delayed. While 2009 ultimately ended up being one of the better years in gaming (Uncharted 2! Modern Warfare 2! Batman: Arkham Asylum! New Super Mario Bros Wii!), it’s interesting to see how much of our expected awesomeness ended up slipping into next year. We might gripe about the fall release schedule, but we’re about to hit it again with the flood of quality postponed titles hitting shelves in early 2010. Here is our daily breakdown (with a system highlighted per day in alphabetical order) of the ten games we’re anticipating the most for 2010. Occasionally, a multiplatform title will show up on one system instead of the other; that is usually reserved for a specific system preference, or to the pseudoscientific “what games are you anticipating most?” email thread within the 1UP office. This is just our own collective Top 10; sound off on the message boards about the ten games per system that you’re looking forward to most.

In The Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces, players hold the Nunchuk in the right hand as the flight control stick is tilted to roll, pitch, and yaw, while the Wii Remote held in the left hand is titled up to accelerate and down to decelerate in its role as the throttle. The somber story of a world that needs war to survive, based on a novel series by Hiroshi Mori and adapted into an animated film released by Sony Pictures in the US, is told with a combination of animated cut-scenes and voiced in-game sequences during battle.

January 26th, 2010 – Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All Stars
Click here to view the embedded video.
Tatsunoko vs. Capcom is Capcom’s seventh installment in its Vs. series, which includes the Marvel vs. Capcom and Capcom vs. SNK games. It is the first Vs. series game to feature 3D graphics on a 2D plane. This creates a 2.5D environment consisting of character models and backgrounds rendered in 3D, while gameplay remains on a 2D plane used in traditional fighting games.[8] Tatsunoko vs. Capcom does not have the more complex attack systems like in the Street Fighter series and some previous Versus fighting titles. The game uses a simplified three-button attack system with the option for a more simplified control scheme since it was developed with the Wii in mind.

February 9th, 2010 – Shiren the Wanderer
Click here to view the embedded video.
Shiren is a rogue-like, a term coined for a sub-genre of RPG games that asks players to brave deadly dungeons where they collect gear and items and live their way to the other side. Typically, rogue-likes are turn-based, meaning that for every action your character takes, the enemies in the dungeon get one in response. The genre is also known for breaking players’ souls over its proverbial knee, as the formula for success is a fantastic mix of skill and luck that will never play out the same way twice.
Shiren’s latest outing is more like a traditional Japanese RPG than it ever has been. With an epic story spanning 1,000 years, three playable characters, huge item and monster lists, and key scenes being delivered in full-motion video, even gamers who tend to run for the hills whenever someone says the word “rogue-like” will feel right at home here. This blog is for you, Persona and JRPG fans. I’m one of you at heart, and Shiren is right up your alley.

February 22nd, 2010 – Endless Ocean: Blue World
Click here to view the embedded video.
Endless Ocean 2: Adventures of the Deep features improved graphics and larger explorable areas than the previous game. Adventures of the Deep allows players to travel to six different diving spots around the globe, including new polar and river locations.
Adventures of the Deep was designed with a plot which players may choose to follow. The plot centers around a woman called Océane (Europe) or Oceana (North America), whose late father was a dedicated ocean explorer, and whose target is to continue his investigation into the Song of Dragons, a song apparently lost in the Pacific Ocean. She is helped by her grandfather, Jean-Eric, whom she lives with.
Here, the player is seen to have encountered a creature which may turn hostile.
The ability to dive with a dolphin as a companion returns from the first game, and players will now also be able to ride them to move quickly through the water. Players can also sell salvaged treasure for money that can be used to buy items to decorate their private reef and aquarium. Potentially dangerous creatures such as sharks and crocodiles will now elicit a warning for players and may even attack them; players will be able to drive them off using a new tranquilizer-like tool called the Pulsar which calms them down. The Pulsar can also be used to heal any creatures the player finds that are unwell.
Adventures of the Deep features online cooperative multiplayer that allows players to communicate using the Wii Speak peripheral. As with the first game, players will also be able to take pictures during their dives, which can now be saved to an SD card.

There will also be a ‘Mega Man Challenges’ mode where players can practice their skills. Returning features from the previous game include an in-between level item shop and downloadable content.

March 30th, 2010 – Max & the Magic Marker
Click here to view the embedded video.
Max & the Magic Marker is a physics based 2D platform game, in which the player controls the boy Max and his Magic Marker. While Max enables good old platforming fun, the marker provides the game’s signature feature: the ability for the player to draw directly inside the game world where everything drawn becomes physical objects. This feature is used to complete levels and overcome challenges but it also provides the player with a unique tool that in itself is fun to play around with.
The objective of the Max project is:
• To reinvent and celebrate the 2D platformer
• To make a game that you can play with – not just play
• To utilize the drawing mechanic in an speedy action game
• To make a game that is for everyone

The game can be controlled using one of four control methods: Wii Remote with Nunchuk, Wii Zapper, Classic Controller (as well as the Classic Controller Pro) and the Nintendo GameCube Controller. Playing as either Isa or Kachi, the player traverses through on-rail levels, moving and shooting independently. Attacking enemies can either be shot at from afar, or melee attacked when they are close enough. Some missiles can be melee attacked to turn them against enemies. Getting successive enemy hits whilst remaining unscathed increases the score multiplier.

March 31st, 2010 – Super Meat Boy
Click here to view the embedded video.
The game will carry the same basic premise as the Flash version, and sees players taking on the role of a small animated cube of meat who must save his girlfriend Band-Aid Girl from the evil Dr. Fetus. Players must guide Meat Boy to the end of each level, using his wall clinging ability, whilst avoiding buzzsaws, salt, and other various death bringing obstacles. The game will contain over 100 levels, unlockable content and multiplayer co-op and versus modes, as well as a four player party mode. The multiplayer modes will also feature playable characters from other independent games, which must be unlocked by the player by collecting Band-Aids in the game. Completing a level with an ‘A’ grade will unlock a harder alternate level. Occasionally warp zones appear that warp the player to either an indie game, where players can play as and unlock characters such as Tim from Braid, or retro levels, which are shown in 4-bit, 8-bit and even Game Boy style graphics. These levels will also have retro rules applied to them (such as a three life limit). There will also be a replay function, showcasing failed attempts simultaneously, and a full level editor.

WiiNintendo posted:
ONM: Recently, you said that you’ve wanted to create a multiplayer Mario game for 15 years. Why did it take so long to come to fruition?
Shigeru Miyamoto: We’ve been experimenting with many different approaches over the years. As a result, through trial and error, we realised we finally had the know-how to create a multiplayer mode. But the biggest change was the availability of the technology within the Wii hardware.
Before then, it was not actually possible. It’s quite a technical thing you are talking about – to enable multiplayer mode in one fixed screen like in Super Mario Bros – and we really had a great many challenges to overcome. For example, when there are multiple players appearing on one screen, if somebody is late to catch up, then naturally without zooming out the total visible area of the screen, then that player might get left out. They would be off the screen and would not be able to play. And because each character is moving with their own AI, it required a great deal of processing power and that was provided by the Wii.
ONM: Was online multiplayer considered for the game at all? Was it just too difficult to get it to work without any lag?
SM: Well, it’s not for purely technological issues that it wasn’t included. After all, as you know, we already have online play in Smash Bros., and technologically speaking, I don’t think it’s creating a high amount of lag. It’s just a matter of our priorities when it comes to the creation of a game. We just prioritised on making a multiplayer mode where four players can sit together and play while seeing each other’s faces.
We thought that this was more important as far as this New Super Mario Bros. was concerned, but we don’t know about the future. Because network environments are getting better and better every day, it may be possible in a future edition to incorporate that type of multiplayer online mode for a real-time action game. But I am just talking about the technological aspect here. What’s more important, of course, is if it’s going to add to the fun aspect of the game.
ONM: Would you say that’s part of the overall strategy with the Wii – that you wanted to get away from the traditional image of the lone gamer in the bedroom? Was it a deliberate decision to make local multiplayer games so that the family could all sit in the front room and play together?
SM: No, I would not say that. I just mean that it so happens that the Wii hardware now is often hooked up to a big television in the living room, so with those kind of circumstances, when we thought about what kind of Super Mario Bros. game we should make, we imagined that multiplayer mode would enable and invite the whole family to play together.
That’s not just confined to this specific project but I myself am a self-declared avid gamer – for my age! – and I’m always fond of playing the single-player mode and trying to conquer everything myself. But also, there are many Nintendo employees who are really good at the Super Mario Bros. games and when they try out New Super Mario Bros. Wii’s multiplayer mode they enjoy themselves very much.
In addition to being able to enjoy the game’s single-player mode, they said that they were able to discover this new joy that they hadn’t experienced with previous versions of the Super Mario series.
So in addition to the solid fun being delivered by the single-player mode, the fact that we were able to add the multiplayer mode was a significant improvement. Coin Battle is going to be really exciting!
ONM: You’ve spoken about making Super Mario Galaxy 2 more difficult. Will we see the Super Guide return in that game?
SM: Well, as far as the challenge of Super Mario Galaxy 2 is concerned, I think it’s going to be a really challenging game, but whether or not we are going to incorporate the Super Guide, I just cannot tell. In general, wherever and whenever appropriate, I think we will want to incorporate that kind of thing, but I cannot commit myself to anything specific right now.
